Chafee Center Receives $200,000 from SBA to Support Small Business Export Growth

THE JOHN H. CHAFEE Center for International Business has received a $200,000 grant from the United States Small Business Administration to help support small business export growth in Rhode Island.

SMITHFIELD — The John H. Chafee Center for International Business at Bryant University became the beneficiary of a six-figure federal grant from the United States Small Business Administration to help support small business export growth within the state.

The SBA announced Thursday that the Chafee Center, which manages the state trade office and the SBA’s State Trade Export and Promotions program, has received a $200,000 grant to help small businesses with information and tools needed to succeed in export-related activities. Such activities include participating in foreign trade missions, market sales trips, designing international marketing campaigns, participating in exhibitions at export fairs, and attending training workshops.

Mike Vlacich, the SBA’s regional administrator in New England, said in a statement that with 96% of consumers living outside the US and two-thirds of the world’s purchasing power abroad, it is leveling the playing field for small-scale opportunities. companies to access these potential customers is ‘critical’.

“This federal funding allows the John H. Chafee Center for International Business to support new and existing small business exporters to increase sales and expand markets through the SBA’s State Trade Expansion Program,” said Vlacich.

The funding is part of the total $20 million grant that the SBA is awarding to international trade agencies in the US through the State Trade Expansion Program, the SBA said. In a statement, Mark S. Hayward, director of SBA Rhode Island District, said the Chafee Center has spent the past 10 years using STEP funding to grow small Rhode Island businesses, enabling them to increase their international presence and sales “without big impact on their bottom line.”
