Well, look at that. Less than a week after I scolded the whole room for being off-putting to the developers of God of War Ragnarök for wanting to know the release date – we know the release date. There is an obvious conclusion here: let me yell at you and positive changes will occur. Of course we also got a delay on Forspoken, which will no longer be released in October. No, instead it went from a release right between The Last of Us Part 1 and God of War to the relatively empty playing field of January 2023. huh.
We also saw the resurrection of E3 this week, sort of. The ESA announced it is partnering with ReedPop, the PAX folks, to make the event possible. I enjoy the subtle shadow ESA CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis cast on those other summer game shows by saying, “The past three years have confirmed that E3 is bringing our industry together like no other event.” I’m not saying I agree, but I see a lot of “Aw heck, I actually miss E3” sentiment popping up. I don’t hunt a dog – I’ve never been to an E3 personal event.
Speaking of resurrections, we finally have our first look at Skull & Bones too. I started to think it was a myth. But no, Ubisoft has revealed what it’s been doing for nearly a decade: it’s a pirate MMO, just the way we thought it would be. Well, maybe that’s not quite fair. I’m definitely going to try it because I loved the ship combat in Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. If it plays the way it looks, this will probably just be a nicer version than that. I can’t say I’m going to play it a lot, but I’ll play it at least once.
In personal news, I did something I know I’m going to regret: I started a new farm in Stardew Valley. I hadn’t gotten back to it since the last major update. Something about this game is great for when it’s too hot and you just want to stay inside and play something sweet. Some games are a glass of lemonade, others are a hot mug of tea – Stardew is somehow both. I’m also going to take a moment to check out a game that came out recently that I hadn’t been able to play: AI: The Somnium Files – Nirvana Initiative. It’s a sci-fi noir detective adventure, that ticks my boxes and then some.
What to play this week?
